Malawi’s Lilly Alfonso Designs and Sews her Way towards Stardom

Malawian designer Lilly Alfonso recently shared with Urban Life Malawi how from the young age of six she has grown her talent for clothes designing leading her to make her mark in Malawi’s emerging fashion industry.
In the interview the talented Blantyre resident (32) comments that it was only after years of sewing and altering clothes for her growing clientele that she became aware that her passion for fashion could become a profession. Crossing over into professional designing came in 2006 when she was invited to design garments for that years Miss Malawi contest.
Since then, according to the Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) 2012
Lilly’s fashion label, Lilly’s Creations is a fashion design label that has evolved over the years to become one of the top fashion labels in Malawi. Despite the low level of development in the Malawi Fashion industry, she moved against the tide until she won FAME 2010 (Malawi Fashion Edition) as the best fashion designer. Since then Lilly has grown into a force to reckon with in Malawi fashion, with a retinue of clients from across the social strata. Lilly fulfills all design criteria from traditional wear to glamorous evening wear.
