The fight against LRA – ICC, Uganda and the United States of America join hands

While the International Crime Court (ICC) in The Hague issued already 2005 an international warrant for Joseph Kony, the Commander-in-Chief of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Barrack Obama, president of the United States, now announced to send 100 “combat-equipped” troops to Uganda to help the government and the Ugandan army fighting the rebel army.

According to Aljazeera.net Obama explained to the Congress these troops could also operate in South Soudan, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo where Kony is actually expected to hide and operate. Besides that Obama pointed out American soldiers would not actively participate in the battle against the rebels but

they will only be providing information, advice, and assistance to partner nation forces. They will not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense. All appropriate precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of US military personnel during their deployment. (alJazeera.net, 15 Oct 2011)

While Obama announced such military support mainly for Uganda the legitimization of this military intervention is questionable especially against the background of an intervention which could also be expanded to neighboring countries named above. Without any resolution from the Security Council of the United Nations it would basically not be legitimized.
