Unrest in Eastern DRC’s North Kivu region continues

Thursday 12th, July 2012 / 09:21 Written by

Since the outbreak last week, fierce fighting has been reported from the DRC’s North Kivu region. After rebel forces from the so-called M23 movement seized strategic towns a few days ago, the provincial capital Goma is now threatened. The UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO responded to that by backing the Congolese army and positioning its joint forces in order to protect the capital. It is an appearance of the UN mission which the region has not seen before and it remains to be seen how the blue berets will react in case of an actual attack on Goma.
